Comment on California and Pot: Is Legalizing it Even Worth the Trouble? by Kamikaze Q

Cyrstal,

Of all the things I write about this is the thing that gets a comment out of you? You damn treehugging hippy!! :D

Oh don't get me wrong but I think it is a good idea despite what issues may result. In addition to revenue this will help to empty up Cali's overpopulated jail system. It was never a question of the federal government overturning the state's law but just a matter of the federal government attempting to enforce federal law. The feds don't have the power to overturn the state's law and unless political pressure is pushing for federal enforcement or we just get a president that has a major hate for pot I don't see the government stepping in. Marijuana is classified the way it is due to activism by the alchohol barons during the time of prohibition out of fear of it taking away from alchohol sales. Many politicians have expressed a desire to change that classification but it is just a bitch to do so. It's way more easier for the feds to just look the other way as long as political opinion is not calling for action.

I think the current AZ law reinforces my point that out of state will still be an issue. Other states that do not approve of the Arizona law are boycotting the state. This is America and in America you will always have someone or some organization that will look for a great evil to battle. When I lived in Montana the local government feared the growth of the town because they felt that doing so might invite more of a drug element. In the same sense if an area suddenly started having an influx of pot related arrests and could trace the origin of the product to legal purchases in Cali I bet you that some politician or parent would complain. Hell the US Government had a major issue with Canada legalizing medicinal marijuana and went on record to say that if any pot in the US was traced back to Canada in origin we would proceed to close our borders to them. I'm not so much concerned with the plight of individuals because like you said a crime is a crime and if you use pot outside of a state where it is legally allowed you have no one but yourself to blame.

Thanks for commenting Crystal. Miss ya.

I think that it is still a good idea. I don't think any president would over turn a states laws on the federal level unless "terrorism" was involved. The government hasn't stepped in in AZ yet and yet on the federal level it is illegal to require some one to show ID. It looks bad and is very unpopular with voters, especially with something as "trivial" as pot.

It will also free up billions over time in CA jails and in the legal system if we are no longer sending to trial small time drug users. I don't think any kid should have their life changed forever for smoking pot, they can NEVER get a federal job and have a bitch of a time ever leaving the country. But even if taxed income from weed goes down, or they have a hard time regulating it, at least they don't have to pay to prosecute/incarcerate all these people.

As for the out of state bits, no trouble at all in Amsterdam. It is made every clear when and where you can smoke/eat etc your pot and if you do it outside of those areas, then it is your own damned fault. In some states it is legal to date a minor, but it is illegal to cross state lines with one. It is legal to talk on your cell phone in some states and illegal in others, your the driver and your responsible for knowing the local laws. Same goes for buying and using your marijuana, know the rules, it is your responsibility.
